Green Sea Dyke Middelkerke (B) wins Public Space Prize
During the Belgian Public Space Congress in Antwerp's Queen Elisabeth Hall, Infopoint Public Space awarded the seventeenth Public Space Prize. . The public's prize went to Middelkerke with the Groene Zeedijk project. The furniture for this project, including the square bench on the Rauschenbergplein in Westende, was realised by Grijsen.

"With the Public Space Prize, we want to encourage governments to invest in a pleasant, safe, sustainable and resilient living environment," said Tom Dhollander (managing director Voetgangersbeweging (pedestrian association). "After all, public space touches on all aspects of policy, from health to city marketing, from youth to mobility and everything in between. 'Choosing for pedestrians' is the way to go because people are central, without a public no public space." The seventeenth project call Public Space attracted 44 entries.
Infopunt Public Space (Publieke Ruimte) is a sub-operation of Voetgangersbeweging (pedestrian association) and is the Flemish knowledge centre and network organisation for public space and represents some 50 cities and municipalities, about 100 private partners including study bureaus, producers and training institutions and about 10 Flemish government agencies and professional federations.
Public award for Green Sea Dyke Middelkerke
In addition to the jury prizes, the general public also had the opportunity to put forward a favourite from among the six nominations. This was possible via an online vote that was open for one month. 5,700 votes were cast. The Public Prize Public Space 2024 went to Groene Zeedijk in Middelkerke.
Jury winner in the 'Urban projects' category
Kortrijk was winner in the 'urban projects' category with the transformation of an asphalt surface, focused on the car, into Groeninge Park, laid out as an urban garden for everyone.
Jury winner in the 'rural projects' category
Wevelgem municipality was declared winner in the 'rural projects' category with the transformation of the paved, wide Bankbeekstraat into a climate-adaptive, green and safe village street
