Royale en ruime banken voor Amsterdamse studenten

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is closely linked to the city of Amsterdam. The city is an ideal environment for the university: 'the city is our campus'. However, the many university locations in the city also result in fragmentation. To counteract this, the UvA is working on concentrating in a limited number of areas, including the Science Park. Grijsen park and street design have contributed to the design of this ambitious knowledge park.

Big investment

The current Science Park is gradually developing into a place where knowledge, innovation, and entrepreneurship come together. Recently, the new building of the modern Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science and the Universum University Sports Centre was completed. In addition, the construction of the Amsterdam University College has started in the Science Park.

Furniture for student housing

For the entrance hall and the immediate surroundings of this newly built student accommodation, Grijsen made custom-made park and street furniture. The design was done in collaboration with HKSJ Architects. The voluminous wooden seating elements bring natural warmth to the predominantly urban/industrial interior architecture of the entrance hall. The generous and wide seats invite you to take a seat and engage in conversation with fellow students, while the high backrests provide separation and privacy for those who need it. The furniture has many curved and rounded parts: playful and varied and above all friendly.

Outside the building, solitary benches and wall benches with curves have been installed, which are unmistakably related to the seating furniture in the hall. The seats of the furniture are made of 100% FSC Iroko wood. The frames are made of hot-dip galvanized steel with a durable two-layer powder coating.
