Optimal recreation for train and bus passengers in Assen
The transformation of the station building in Assen and the surrounding outdoor area has been completed. In recent times the station has changed from a transit station to a final destination. The station was rebuilt and given a triangular wooden roof of 3,000 square meters. This project was to improve the accessibility and appearance of the city of Assen.

More space for pedestrians and cyclists
During the redesign, the choice was made to build a car tunnel. In the old situation, the area was mainly designed for cars. In the new location cyclists and pedestrians should be given priority and space. The car tunnel will lead to car traffic underneath the station area. This will allow cyclists and pedestrians to safely enjoy the outdoor space around the station.
Seating on natural stone
Grijsen has contributed to the design of this outdoor space. Grijsen has placed several seating areas around the train station. These wooden benches are placed on separation of natural stone. The natural stone partition also serves as a planter. This creates a green environment for bus and train passengers waiting for their next bus or train. The robust dimensions of the ends of these wooden seating elements are recognizable. In addition, the beams in the seating area are tapered. This ensures that the space between two beams in the seat, despite the round shape of the bench, is the same size in every place. This enhances the seating comfort of the sofa.
