Custom-made planters on the Amsterdam peninsula IJdock
Since its completion at the end of 2012, one can enjoy IJDock. A beautiful and modern peninsula in the IJ. It is extraordinary that this space could be created in the busy city of Amsterdam. But through excavation in the IJ it was possible. The size of the brand new peninsula is about two football fields. It provides space for a hotel, restaurants, and the Palace of Justice.

Softening of the outdoor space
Still, the IJDock was not finished and there was room for improvement. Because of the beautiful, but 'hard' materials and modern look, a certain softening could be added. An important part of this was to provide greenery. Criteria were that these would be above ground level and therefore not inviting as a dog walking area. This gave rise to the idea of planters. Grijsen was selected to make a design for the planters.
Made to measure
The planters for IJDock have been given their style by using wood and sprayed steel with the name IJDock. Two designs of the planters reflect the urban cuts off the island. The choice to use wood in the planters will also improve the acoustics of the peninsula.
In total, we have made 10 planters.
The plan 'Greening of IJDock' was commissioned by the head of the VvE IJDock and executed by contractor Studio Wuft and coordinator Florence Liot Backer.
