Tree grates on Jaarbeursplein connect nicely with the pavement

The Jaarbeursplein in Utrecht has been completely renewed in recent years. The square has become car-free with space for trees, water, and natural stone. In addition to a large pond, space has been created for all pedestrians and cyclists that are present in this area. In better times, the square is also suitable for large events, as a large stage can be placed over the pond. Underneath the square, a three-story car park has been built with space for 778 cars.

On the new square, there is room for green. Several trees provide the square with natural shade. Grijsen was called in to make and supply the tree grids around these trees. The tree grids were designed to be an extension of the street work: the pattern of the tiles continues in the design of the tree grid. The custom-made tree grids were designed by Okra landscape architects based on the standard Mosa tree grid. In total, more than 30 tree grids have been made for the Jaarbeursplein.

Tree grates usually have an insertion border. The inlay edges offer protection against traffic that drives over the tree grids. At the Jaarbeursplein, the choice was made for reinforced inlay edges which can carry a load of 50 kN. By using this inlay edge, the grids are also resistant to lorry traffic and other heavy objects.
